At first, there were no standards at all—each manufacturer designed its own plugs and sockets, and many appliances were wired directly into the wall. Safety was minimal, and the risk of electric shock or fire was high.
The first detachable plugs and outlets appeared around 1900. They were simple, often made of porcelain, and lacked grounding. The goal was to make it easier and safer to connect appliances without handling bare wires. For travelers and manufacturers, this diversity can be a headache. A laptop charger that works in New York won’t fit the wall socket in Paris or London without an adapter. Appliance makers must produce multiple versions of the same product to meet local standards.
The Push for Global Standards
As international trade and travel expanded in the late 20th century, organizations like the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) sought to harmonize electrical standards. The IEC introduced the Type C plug, a simple two-pin design used widely across Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. Yet despite these efforts, no single global standard has taken hold. The cost of replacing existing infrastructure—and the political will required to do so—has kept the world’s outlets as diverse as ever.
