Moving to a new home comes with a long to-do list, and one of the most important tasks is making sure your mail follows you. Forgetting to update your address can mean missing important bills, tax documents, or packages. Fortunately, it’s easy to stay on top of things if you know what to do. Here’s a simple guide to help you check, update, and confirm your change of address so your mail finds you at your new place.

File Your Change of Address with USPS

The first step is to file an official change of address with the United States Postal Service (USPS). You can do this online at moversguide.usps.com or in person at your local post office. There’s a small identity verification fee if you do it online, but it’s quick and secure.

You can choose whether your move is permanent or temporary. A permanent change updates your address for all future mail, while a temporary one forwards mail for a set period—useful if you’re away for a few months. USPS will forward most mail for up to 12 months and magazines for 60 days.

Notify Key Organizations and Services

While USPS forwarding helps, it doesn’t automatically update your address with every sender. You’ll need to contact important organizations directly to make sure they have your new information. Start with:

  • Banks and credit card companies
  • Insurance providers
  • Employers and payroll departments
  • Utility companies (electric, gas, water, internet)
  • Government agencies such as the IRS and DMV

For the IRS, you can update your address by filing Form 8822 or by using your online IRS account. For your driver’s license and vehicle registration, check your state’s DMV website—most states require you to update your address within 30 days of moving.

Update Subscriptions and Online Accounts

Don’t forget about your subscriptions and memberships. Magazines, streaming services, gyms, and online retailers won’t automatically get your new address. Log in to your accounts and update your shipping and billing information. If you shop online frequently, double-check your saved addresses before placing your next order to avoid packages being sent to your old home.

A helpful tip: make a list of all the places you receive mail or deliveries from. Work through the list one by one to ensure nothing slips through the cracks.

Keep an Eye on Your Mail Forwarding

Even after you’ve filed your change of address, it’s smart to monitor your mail for a few weeks. If you notice that certain mail isn’t being forwarded, contact the sender directly to confirm they have your new address. USPS forwarding is a great safety net, but it’s not foolproof—especially for packages or bulk mail.

You can also sign up for USPS Informed Delivery, a free service that lets you preview incoming mail online. It’s a convenient way to make sure you’re not missing anything important during your move.

Protect Your Identity and Privacy

An outdated address can lead to more than just missed mail—it can also create security risks. Sensitive documents like bank statements or medical bills could end up in someone else’s hands. By updating your address promptly, you help protect your personal information and reduce the risk of identity theft.

If you’re moving out of an apartment or shared housing, consider having your mail held at the post office for a few days before your move. That way, nothing gets lost in the transition.

Double-Check After You’ve Settled In

Once you’re settled in your new home, take a moment to confirm that everything is working as it should. Are you receiving all your regular mail? Have all your bills and subscriptions arrived at the right place? After a month or two, review your list again to make sure no one was missed.

A Small Step That Makes a Big Difference

Updating your address might not be the most exciting part of moving, but it’s one of the most important. It only takes a few minutes, yet it saves you from missed bills, lost packages, and unnecessary stress. So before you unpack that last box, take a moment to make sure your mail knows where to find you. It’s a small step that makes settling into your new home a whole lot smoother.
