Sizing is about finding the right balance between capacity, cost, and durability. Achieving that balance requires understanding soil conditions, rainfall patterns, and the structure being protected.

Know Your Soil – The Critical Factor

Soil type has a major impact on how water moves through the ground. Sandy soils drain quickly, while clay soils retain water. Before designing a drainage system, always conduct a soil test to determine permeability and groundwater levels.

  • Sandy soil: Often requires smaller pipes and fewer lines since water naturally infiltrates.

Also consider the types of surfaces involved:

  • Roofs shed water quickly and require higher capacity.
  • Lawns and landscaped areas absorb some water but can become saturated during heavy rain.
  • Paved areas like driveways and patios send nearly all water directly to the drain.

By combining these factors, you can calculate the total runoff volume your system must manage.

Slope and Placement – Small Errors, Big Consequences

Even a correctly sized pipe won’t perform well if it’s installed improperly. Too little slope can cause standing water and blockages, while too much slope can lead to erosion and uneven drainage.
