Tablets, smartphones, and gaming consoles have become a natural part of children’s daily lives. They offer opportunities for learning, creativity, and social connection—but they can also take time away from movement and outdoor play. For many parents, the challenge is finding the right balance between screen time and physical activity. How can families create a routine where digital play and active play complement each other instead of competing?

Screens as Part of Modern Family Life

Digital media are no longer just entertainment—they’re woven into children’s social and educational worlds. Schools use tablets for lessons, friends connect through online games, and many digital activities encourage problem-solving and teamwork. It’s neither realistic nor necessary to eliminate screens completely.

The problem arises when screen time crowds out movement, sleep, or family interaction. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children and teens should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, yet many fall short. Parents can play a key role in helping kids build healthy habits and structure their time.

Set Family Agreements About Screen Time

Instead of strict bans, it’s often more effective to make shared agreements. Talk with your children about when and how long they can play games or watch videos—and explain why breaks and movement matter. When kids understand the reasons behind the rules, they’re more likely to follow them.

A few simple principles can help:

  • Create screen-free zones—for example, at the dinner table or in bedrooms.
  • Set specific times for gaming or shows—so screens don’t take over the day.
  • Make screen time part of a routine—perhaps after homework or outdoor play.
  • Be a role model—children notice how parents use their own devices.

When expectations are clear and consistent, it’s easier for the whole family to find a rhythm that works.

Make Movement Fun—Not a Chore

Physical activity doesn’t have to mean organized sports. What matters most is that kids move their bodies and enjoy it. A walk with the dog, a bike ride to the park, or a game of tag in the backyard all count.

For younger children, turning movement into a game can help: Who can jump the farthest? How many steps can we climb? For older kids, combining technology and activity can be motivating—using step counters, dance games, or fitness apps that turn exercise into a challenge.

When movement becomes a natural and enjoyable part of daily life, it feels less like a task and more like something to look forward to.

Combine Digital Play and Physical Activity

Instead of seeing digital play and physical activity as opposites, families can blend them. Many games and apps now encourage movement—from dance and fitness games to augmented reality adventures that get players exploring the real world.

Technology can also inspire activity: watch a short workout video and try it together, use an app to discover new hiking trails, or start a digital photo challenge where everyone takes pictures of nature during a walk.

In this way, screens become tools that support activity rather than replace it.

Build Balance Through Shared Experiences

The goal isn’t to count every minute of screen time but to create a family life filled with variety and connection. When families do things together—both digitally and physically—it strengthens relationships and makes balance easier to achieve.

Try setting aside a weekly “family day” that includes both digital and active fun. You might play a cooperative video game together, then head outside for a bike ride, a swim, or a game of catch. The mix of play, movement, and togetherness builds energy and lasting memories.

A Healthy Balance in a Digital Age

Digital play is here to stay, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The key is to use technology mindfully and make room for both rest and movement. When families find their own rhythm—where screens and activity go hand in hand—children gain the best of both worlds and a healthier, happier everyday life.
